South Lanarkshire Council faces £77m funding gap

South Lanarkshire Council has revealed it is facing a budget deficit of more than £77 million over the next three financial years.

This financial hardship will require difficult decisions about what services the council can continue to provide and in what form.

The board’s executive director of finance and corporate resources, Jackie Taylorsaid: “We are taking a slightly different approach with our first budget indications this year, looking at a medium-term strategy rather than just one year at a time.

“When we look at the financial years 2025/26, 2026/27 and 2027/28, we forecast the budget deficit to be £77.275 million.

“Difficult decisions will need to be made to balance the council’s budget. We will need to significantly change what we deliver over the next three years, with a focus on statutory services. There will likely be areas where we will need to consider whether we can continue to deliver services and, if so, what those services will actually look like.

“As in previous years, we will consult with our communities on what is important to them and communicate how we will do this in the coming months.”
