Number of fintechs globally by region in 2024
As of January 2024, the Americas (North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean) was the region with the largest number of fintechs globally. In the Americas there were approximately 13,100 fintechs, almost 1,500 more than a year earlier. In comparison, there were 10,969 fintechs in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region and 5,886 in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2023, the United States ranked first in terms of number of fintech unicorns globallywith around five times as many of these companies as the UK, which ranked second.
The fintech investment landscape
Investment in the fintech sector has grown significantly over the last decade value of the overall investment reaching an all-time high in 2021. In 2022, however, investment activity slowed significantly, with the Americas experiencing a particularly sharp decline in the value of investments. The decline in the value of investments was most likely caused by the economic contraction triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The main fintech companies
In recent years, the services provided by fintech companies have become part of everyday life and more and more of them emerge every year. Most fintech companies come from the United States and China, and these two countries are also home to eight of the ten countries largest fintech companies in the world in January 2024. Despite the dominance of the United States and China, in 2022, the the most valuable fintech unicorn in the world there was the Irish payment processing platform, Stripe.
