Korean retail investors were active buyers of US-listed ETFs in June

LONDON — July 9, 2024— ETFGI, a leading independent research and advisory firm covering trends in the global ETF ecosystem, today announced that Korean retail investors were active buyers of U.S.-listed ETFs in June. In June, 26 of the top 50 foreign securities purchased by Korean retail investors were U.S.-listed ETFs. The number of ETFs on the top 50 list increased by 3 from 23 in May, by 1 from 25 in April, and by 1 from March.

Strong points

• In June, 26 of the top 50 foreign stocks purchased by Korean retail investors were U.S.-listed ETFs.
• Thirteen of the twenty-six ETFs in the top 50 offer leverage or inverse exposure.
• The largest purchase was $2.04 billion of the US-listed Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bull 3X SHS ETF.

According to ETFGI data, the ETF industry in South Korea has 1,255 ETFs with assets of $122.57 billion from 37 providers listed on the Korea Exchange as of the end of June. Twenty-six percent of ETFs in Korea offer leverage or inverse exposure and account for 10.4% of total assets invested in the ETF industry in Korea.
