Korean retail investors actively invested in overseas-listed ETFs in May.

LONDON — June 21, 2024— ETFGI, a leading independent research and advisory firm covering trends in the global ETF ecosystem, reported today that in May, 23 of the top 50 foreign securities purchased by Korean retail investors were ETFs listed in the United States and Japan. The number of ETFs on the list decreased by 2 from 25 in April 2024, decreased by 2 from 25 in March 2024, and remains the same as in February 2024.

South Korea’s ETF industry had 1,251 ETFs, with assets of $116.89 billion, from 37 providers listed on the Korea Stock Exchange as of the end of May. According to ETFGI data, 26.1% of ETFs offer leverage or inverse exposure, accounting for 10.5% of South Korea’s ETF industry assets.

Looking at the global ETF industry, leveraged and inverse ETFs account for 9.6% of 12,321 products, but only US$137.96 billion of the US$12.89 trillion in assets under management at the end of May 2024.
