Shelley McInnis, an employee of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center’s (NUWC) Newport Division in the Department of Undersea Warfare Systems (USW), has won the 2024 Business Women’s Award in the Technical Services Industry Leader category from Providence Business News, a weekly publication based in Rhode Island. This annual award recognizes industry leaders who have been practicing for 20 years or more.

McInnis, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, serves the Newport Division in three roles – as a customer advocate for USW trainers, a mission capability manager and as a technical project manager for combat systems trainers. She began her 40-year career with the Newport Division when she was a high school student working as a secretary. She went to college while working full-time and later earned an advanced degree as her career unfolded.

As a customer advocate for USW trainers, she successfully builds working relationships with senior Navy training commanders, interagency training project managers, and systems engineers. McInnis is considered one of the top civilian leaders in training systems and technology in training working groups and mission groups across the Navy.

As the Newport Division’s mission capability manager for warfighter performance and training, McInnis provides a mechanism for aligning the Newport Division across all aspects of mission capabilities, both internally and externally, to facilitate solutions to support evolving needs and new mission areas. She performs training and assessment co-chair responsibilities for the USW Fleet Collaborative Team Executive Working Group.

In his third role, McInnis is technical project manager for combat systems trainers in the USW Combat Systems Department’s Newport Division. She has collaborated with the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Carderock Division, industry partners, and academia to develop and sustain submarine training products for more than 20 years.

“These efforts advance the goals of the Navy and the strategic objectives of the Naval Sea Systems Command by applying engineering and acquisition best practices to training school production sites,” the award states. “McInnis’ contributions and achievements have improved fleet readiness with innovative ideas and cutting-edge technology insertions, resulting in cost-effective USW trainers.”

McInnis will be honored at the Providence Business News ceremony on May 23 in Providence, Rhode Island.
