Sir Philip Davies, a leading Conservative candidate, is under investigation after allegedly betting £8,000 on losing his seat at the next general election.
Sir Davies, who has been the Conservative MP for Shipley since 2005, neither confirmed nor denied the allegations but insisted he had done nothing illegal.
He said The sun which he expects to lose on July 4. He claimed his bet was “nobody’s business” and said, “What’s it to you whether I did it or not. I expect to win. I’m trying really hard to win. I expect to lose.
“In the 2005 election, I tried very hard to win. I expected to lose. I had a bet on myself to lose in the 2005 election, and my bet was blown.”
He added: “And if anyone is alleging that I did something illegal, feel free to do so, but I’m afraid I didn’t.”
