And finally… building a fortune
A construction worker from Virginia in the United States won $1 million (about £0.8 million) after playing Powerball.
Nicholas Perez de Burke didn’t hit the $1 billion (£800 million) jackpot in the April 1 Powerball draw, but he still emerged a millionaire. Perez won the second-tier prize of $1 million by matching the first five winning Powerball numbers.
His winning ticket was one of six nationwide that matched the first five numbers and the only one in Virginia. Perez used the Easy Pick option, allowing the computer to randomly select his numbers.
Retailers receive a bonus for selling high-profile winning tickets, and the Safeway that sold Perez’s ticket won a $10,000 (about £7,850) bonus from the Virginia Lottery. Perez, who works in the construction industry, has not yet planned how he will use his earnings.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 25.
