Amazon to shut down its Astro for Business security bot | Technology News
Amazon.com Inc said Wednesday it would discontinue its Astro for Business security robot for small and medium-sized businesses as it shifts its focus to home robots.
The e-commerce giant initially launched the dog-like robot for home use in 2021. Astro for Business was launched last November for a range of customers including retail, manufacturing, healthcare and wellness.
“To accelerate our progress and continued research to make Astro the best home robot, we have made the decision to end support for Astro for Business,” an Amazon spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement.
The home robot is designed to perform tasks such as home monitoring, setting routines and reminders, and playing music and TV shows as it moves around the house.
The Astro for Business bot, priced at $2,349.99, was available exclusively in the US and was launched to help customers monitor their businesses 24 hours a day.
Astro for Business bots will no longer be working from September 25, according to an email sent by the company to customers and seen by Reuters.
Amazon has announced a $300 credit that affected customers can use to support a replacement workplace solution.
Customers will also be waived for the Astro Secure subscription fee starting Wednesday and will receive a refund for any unused prepaid fees.
