A new Starbucks is in the works, a movie theater is closing and more local business news
SAGINAW, MI – From a new Starbucks coming to Gratiot Road to a movie theater closing in Fashion Square Mall, here’s some recent mid-Michigan business news you may have missed.
What is that? Starbucks Brewery Plans Another New Store in Saginaw
Another new Starbucks store will open this summer in Saginaw County.
The coffee giant is expanding into Thomas Township just months after opening a new store in Bridgeport Township.
Dan Sika, community development director for Thomas Township, confirmed that the building, a former Burger King located at 7868 Gratiot Road, is being renovated now and is expected to reopen as a Starbucks later this summer.
“It’s certainly great for the business district to not have empty buildings. I was disappointed to see Burger King leave; a lot of people enjoyed going there,” he said, noting that the restaurant closed in early 2023, about the same time that another Burger King with the same ownership closed in Freeland.
“We are buying another great restaurant, we believe, in Starbucks. It’s a win for us and, hopefully, a win for Starbucks.”
Saginaw’s AMC movie theater near Fashion Square Mall closes
Saginaw Township’s AMC movie theater near Fashion Square Mall has closed permanently.
AMC’s Fashion Square 10, located at 4511 Fashion Square Blvd., closed for good at the end of the business day on Sunday, June 2, company spokeswoman Cassie Nichols confirmed.
“AMC routinely reviews theaters in our circuit, as well as opportunities outside of our circuit, and makes decisions based on what will best strengthen the company in the future,” said Nichols.
“We thank our guests at Fashion Square 10 for their patronage and appreciate the community’s support throughout the years of operation.”
Michigan’s oldest cheese shop celebrates 85 years
An iconic company located in the “Cheese Capital of Michigan” is turning 85 and kicking off its anniversary celebration this month as Pinconning hosts its annual cheese festival.
Wilson’s Cheese Shoppe, located off M-13 in Northern Bay County, has been a family-owned business since 1939. Today, the company offers more than 150 varieties of cheese and ships its products nationwide.
“We age our cheeses from mild to over 15 years old,” said owner Brian Saha, who also owns nearby Pinconning Cheese Co..
What is that? New restaurant opens in former Bradley’s Bistro, Richie Rich location
Just past the Goose Tooth Co. Bloom from within and The Salad Bar opens on Washington Avenue, Downtown Saginaw has another new restaurant.
Omar Linder, owner of Big O Burgers and BBQhas a new restaurant, Sarah’s Cafe, at 216 Federal Avenue. The location previously housed Bradley’s Bistro It is Richie Rich’s Downtown Delicatessen.
Sarah’s Café opened its doors to customers for the first time on Tuesday, May 28, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

There’s an Italian restaurant in the Columbus Avenue shopping district with deep roots that’s ready to set the record straight.
Ninos Italiano, located at 1705 Columbus Ave., is open year-round.
Owner Colleen Brandy took over the restaurant in 2020 and officially opened it during the summer when it was closed by the previous owners so they could travel to Italy. They owned it for approximately 39 years, she said.
Although he took over just before COVID-19 shut everything down, it was a little difficult, Brandy said. But it’s getting better.
